After Care for Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)

During your consultation a recommended treatment plan will be provided, you may need more than one treatment to treat the lesions and if you have larger lesions, these may require further treatment. Due to the tendency for your skin to develop DPNs, please remember further top-up treatments are often required about every 2 – 5 years to keep the skin clear. We would also recommend planning a ¼ hour of Dermalux LED to speed up the healing after each treatment.

For the smooth healing of your skin after your treatment, please follow the recommended aftercare below.

Before arriving for your treatment, we recommend you purchase Emla cream, this can be easily purchased over the counter at any pharmacy without the need for a prescription. Emla cream helps to ease the pain of cosmetic and medical procedures that involve needles by temporarily numbing the skin. Apply an hour before treatment time, then reapply half an hour later, please bring your Emla cream with you to top up before starting your treatment.

We always recommend planning ¼ hour of Dermalux LED after each DPN treatment to speed recovery.
After the treatment, you may experience:
  • The treated area and surrounding skin may feel hot for up to 48 hours
  • Reddening, swelling and sensitivity of the skin in the area for up to 48 hours
  • The skin may itch as the healing process takes place.

For most people, the after-effects of the treatment normally clear within the first 48 hours but we all have different rates of healing so don’t be alarmed if the skin takes a little longer to settle, especially if you have recently experienced stress, are a sun worshipper or smoker.

Points to remember for 48 hours post-treatment:
  • For the first 48 hours post-treatment, you must keep the treated area meticulously clean and dry to prevent infection, inflammation or reaction.
  • During your clinical treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and our Light Soothe serum is applied to seal and heal the skin. Please do not cleanse the treated area nor remove the serum the evening of your treatment instead, apply a couple more applications of serum to further calm the skin and finally, apply again before bedtime.
  • Use Alcohol wipes to cleanse the treated area the next morning and continue for the next 48 hours for both morning and evening cleansing, followed by the Light Sooth serum and Light Protect SPF 50 using clean cotton wool to seal the skin.
  • Pin dot crusts or scabs can appear after treatment and will protect and prevent infection. The crusts or scabs are sometimes indistinguishable and these may be “felt” and not “seen.” Do not prematurely rub or pick off these as to do so, may result in scarring.
  • Do not touch, rub or irritate the treated area.  When cleansing, gently pat dry the skin to avoid dislodging any crusts or scabs.
Avoid the following for the first 48 hours:
  • Hot showers, hot baths, hot spicy foods, steam rooms, saunas.
  • Makeup, perfumes, perfumed body lotions, self-tan products, and deodorants.
  • Alcohol, flying and sporting activities e.g., Gym, swimming, running, hot yoga.
  • Exfoliating, waxing and facial steaming until the skin is completely healed.
  • Exposing your skin to UVA and UVB during the entire healing process, wear a hat and reapply our SPF 50 to protect, this is particularly important during the treatment of DPN to avoid hyperpigmentation.
  • Friction on the treated area such as tight-fitting glasses, squeezing spots, tweezing or blowing your nose too vigorously.
Points to remember 1st-week post Treatment:
  • Continue applying Light Soothe Serum and SPF 50 for the next 7 days as this will aid healing.
  • Remember to reapply our SPF 50, to even uneven and hyperpigmentation, especially for Black, Asian and yellow-based skin tones.
  • Be cautious in hot humid weather as perspiring can create an infection.
  • Avoid exfoliation, rough face cloths or towels on the treated area.
  • If you are swimming, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the treated area as this will act as a protective barrier between your skin and the pool water.
  • If you have long nails, please trim these to avoid nails dislodging the fine scabs during cleansing or sleeping.
The recommended home care products are below, these can all be purchased at the clinic:
  • Lynton’s Light Sooth for 48 hours post-treatment.
  • Lynton’s Light Protect SPF 50 for 7 days post-treatment and twice daily to avoid hyperpigmentation and develop an even colour, especially for Black, Asian and yellow-based skin types. Continue all year round.

We always like to see our new clients 1 – 3 weeks after their DPN Patch Test for a complimentary Skin Check to confirm that the skin and pigmentation are healing well. Kindly please plan your Skin Check and recommended Treatment Plan with your therapist in reception. Be patient, it will take about 3-8 weeks after your treatment to see the results, however, if you need to discuss your treatment or skincare needs please call the clinic: 0208 699 1998
